It can be very annoying when you are using one program to navigate through a bunch of folders to find the right file, only to discover you can't open the file in that program. Opening the other program and navigating through all the folders again is frustrating. You could use Windows Explorer to open files, but that's not always convenient. Instead, if you discover a file can't be opened in the program you were trying to use, simply right click it and choose Open With then navigate to the program you want to use.
It's a good idea to have the file extensions showing so you know what type of files you are working with. If they are not showing, go to Start\Control Panel\Folder Options and click the View Tab, scroll down and uncheck the option Hide Extensions for Known File Types.

How to convert almost anything FREE
Zamzar – www.zamzar.com
You
Convert It – www.youconvertit.com
Media Convert – www.media-convert.com
These
are three advanced web applications with some great capabilities.
Collectively, they are able to cnvert just about any audio, video
or document file that comes into your possession into almost any useful
format you can imagine.
All three applications allow you to browse
your computer to upload a file. Zamzar and Media Convert allow URLs,
so you can translate online video or audio into a desktop player format.
Media Convert deals with one file at a time.
Zamzar and You Convert
It allow you to send five files in a single session – and each service
allows you to keep coming back for more. Zamzar has a cap of 100MB
per session; Media Convert limits you to 150MB and You Convert It
doesn’t l;ist a size limit but in testing it handled 260MB without
a problem.
The conversion takes place remotely. Once converted, Zamzar
and You Convert It send documents back by email, while Media Convert
provides a downloadable file.
Obviously there are security concerns.
By giving out your email address to two of the sites, you could be
unwittingly signing up for spam. All three are quick and efficient,
and each offers an extensive list of conversion formats, including
PDF. Between them you should be able to convert just about any word
processor, spreadsheet or presentation document. You can also use
them to send converted documents to colleagues.
Being able to translate
document files this way is impressive but the services go beyond simple
office files and perform much the same function with audio, image
and video files. For example, you can take video files in a wide range
of formats and knock them into shape to view on a format-fussy iPod.
That’s really good news for you iPod users out there!
Another great
program Revati uses – and it’s free, is doPDF at www.dopdf.com. doPDF5.3installs itself as a virtual PDF printer driver so after a successful
installation will appear in your Printers and Faxes list. To convert
to PDF, you just have to print the document to the doPDF free pdf
converter. Open a document (with Microsoft Word, WordPad, NotePad
or any other software), choose Print and select doPDF. It will ask
you where to save the PDF file and when finished, the PDF file will
be automatically opened in your default PDF viewer.
